![]() The symbols of Titans, Hunters, and Warlocks are in order lion, snake, and phoenix. The Traveler is the master of the physical, but cannot create the mental/psychic and cannot actually bestow life by itself. The Demiurge is said to have the head of a lion, the body of a serpent, and the fiery nature of a phoenix. The Demiurge is filled with envy, and tries to limit man's knowledge by forbidding him the fruit of knowledge in paradise. Part copying, part paraphrasing Wikipedia here: In Gnosticism, the Chief creator/master of the physical realm is the Demiurge, but after physically creating mankind, a ray from above enters the body of man and gives him a soul. There's a BUNCH more though, the parallels to Gnosticism are literally everywhere in Destiny if you care to look, but yeah.Īnother parallel was brought to my attention. This interpretation of Chaos lines up perfectly with that in Gnosticism though, so that makes more sense.Īlso, Destiny as a whole is about the balance between light and dark, and about cosmic forces that represent them, and honestly you can boil a lot of Gnosticism down to that as well. Also, the 8 pointed star isn't actually utilized much outside of Gnosticism, Buddhism (in which it's not a star but a wheel, so it's not really the same), and Warhammer 40k. It wants to go back to a purely causal universe, before the Gardener started modifying the Game. Chaos is effectively what the Witness wants, it doesn't want anything interfering with or orchestrating existence. Some supporting evidence is that there were exactly 8 pyramids around the Traveler, arranged like an 8-pointed star, and the 8-pointed star is the Gnostic symbol for Chaos. The concern for everything here would be that if the Veil leads to the River of Souls which is the collective sum of all experience and both the source and end of all souls, the Witness corrupting it would FOREVER destroy or corrupt all life in existence. Ghosts are alive, though, so what if the Traveler created Ghosts by breaching the River of Souls itself with its Heart to provide the psychic energy to combine with its physical creations? If so, it would have been left effectively wounded or incomplete all this time, which is exactly what the Witness says. So, the Light can't create souls and the Dark can't create matter. ![]() The dying only happens in existence, though. In other words, the River of Souls is where all souls come from in birth, and also where all souls return to in death. The thing is, in Gnosticism the River of Souls also refers to the Pleroma, or the collective sum of all experiences. Not sure what the interaction there is exactly but if I were to guess, Throne Worlds are pockets of existence carved into the River of Souls. Way back in Destiny 1's vanilla story, we destroyed the "Black Heart," which was described in places as a dark copy of the Traveler's Heart.Īlso mentioned is the River of Souls, which previously had been I think exclusively linked to the Ascendant Plane and Throne Worlds. For the Gardener, its' would be The Traveler and the Heart. It basically busted the door down with a tree.įor the Winnower, its Aeons would be The Witness and the Black Fleet. When the Traveler attacked the Witness and the Black Fleet, its giant beam created life rather than destroying. The Light is also creation, and the Dark is destruction. Rather, they're part interpretation, part distillation.Īs we learned from Osiris in Lightfall, the Light is the domain of the physical and the Dark is the domain of the mental. Aeons are basically its term for "Avatars of Celestial Beings " but they aren't simply the entity or force made manifest. They each in turn have Aeons to act as their avatars in existence, and in Gnosticism Aeons always exist in pairs. There are two celestial beings, ie the Gardener and the Winnower. If anyone wants to do their own research, this is what I'm talking about: Sethianism - Wikipedia and Gnosticism - Wikipedia I tried posting this in the regular destiny subreddit, but no one cared, so here goes. Ok, so for this post I basically just want to talk about and hash about the Veil and specifically about using Destiny's parallels with Gnosticism to help figure out what any of this is or means.
